What I Stand for?

I have been described variously as a megalomaniac, a crank, a maverick, a publicity seeker, a wild man, a loose cannon, and even a dog (by a Chief Minister), who 'comments on everything under the Sun'.

What am I really ? What do I stand for ? Since the new year is approaching I think a clarification of my views is in order.

I submit that my views are consistent, coherent, and directed to one single aim : To help my country become prosperous with its people having decent lives.

My views are already in my articles and videos on my blog justicekatju.blogspot.in and on the website kgfindia.com, but let me summarize.

(1) Before the Industrial Revolution which began in Western Europe in the mid 18th Century there were feudal, agricultural societies everywhere. The feudal method of production was so backward and primitive (the bullock, buffalo, or horse were used for tilling the land, not tractors ) that very little wealth was generated by it, and hence only a handful of people (kings, aristocrats, zamindars, etc) could be rich, while the vast majority had to be poor. When the cake is small, very few people can eat it.

In sharp contrast, after the Industrial Revolution a unique situation has been created in world history. Modern industry is so powerful and so big that enough wealth can now be generated to meet the basic needs of everyone, and now no one need be poor, and every human being can get a decent life.

However, despite this unique historical situation, the reality is that 80% of the people of the world, including 80% Indians, are poor.

(2) The worst thing in life is poverty. In India there is massive poverty, malnutrition (every second Indian child suffers from malnutrition), unemployment, farmers suicides, skyrocketing prices, lack of healthcare and good education for the vast majority, etc

(3) Science is the only solution to these great social evils. By science I do not mean physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology alone. By science I mean the entire scientific outlook and scientific temper, which must be spread to every nook and corner of our country if we wish to abolish these social evils.

(4) The truth is that the vast majority of our people are intellectually very backward, their minds full of casteism, communalism, and superstitions (see on my blog my articles 'Reply to Young Students', 'The 90%', 'Ten ways of being foolish', and 'Rid our body politic of communal poison'.). And it is not just the uneducated people who are backward. Vast sections of the so called educated people in our society are also casteist, communal, and superstitious.

(5) Therefore my whole effort is to combat backward, feudal ideas and promote rational and scientific thinking among the Indian people so that India emerges as a modern, highly industrialized, prosperous country, in which all its people (and not just a handful) are prosperous. This requires long, steady effort of patiently explaining the truth to the people, which is precisely what I have been doing since long.

(6) We have all the potential of becoming a modern, highly industrialized, prosperous country. We have today (which we did not have in 1947) thousands of outstanding scientists, technicians, engineers, managers, doctors, etc and we also have immense natural wealth, raw materials, etc. We have therefore to convert this potential into a reality so that all our people (and not just a handful) get decent lives.

Is this the objective and thinking of a 'megalomaniac', a 'loose cannon', a 'crank', and a 'wild man' ?

  2. No Sir I think ppl who called you so are loose cannon, I would suggest in case if you have time you may suggest ideas for out judicial system which is almost as horrible as unemployment, farmers suicides, skyrocketing prices, lack of healthcare etc. Since you have been so many years in that domain , can you suggest some scientific ways to reform that system ? something where a common ppl like me get justice in a time bound time.I think that would be best from you. and let me assure you writing letters to rotten politic class would not yield any fruit.

yes, of course, for people who dont want to lose the power they hold. It is not in their interest to see everyone have decent lives. Poverty is being engineered by some set of ruling class so that these poor people could be used as vote banks. How dare you try to remove such a poverty and kill the ruling class' dream?

  5. Sir, I just wanted to tell that you should not mind the awful comments on twitter and elsewhere. 90% of Indians cannot accept the truth, because it is bitter. Very few people are Dabangg enough to agree with the truth and state it in public. India needs strong leaders like you, who are willing to stand for truth always. I wish every political leader in India had thoughts exactly like you.

  7. Dear Mr Katju, It's easy to write sermons, but it is very difficult to practice what you preach. Your preference for corrupt and communal political parties like Indian (Anti) National Congress is too obvious, your "single aim" and "ideas" aside. We have seen you comment always against NDA politicians e.g., against Narendra Modi (Gujarat), Nitish Kumar (Bihar) or against other parties that oppose Congress - e.g., Mamata Banerjee (WB). If we see an honest critique from you about the dynastic, communal, corrupt, anti democratic and anti national leaders of Congress party and Nehru dynasty, we may believe a few of your claims above. Hope for a new Katju in 2013, hope you will not let my hopes go waste.

  10. Sir, Please talk about the way we imitate Bollywood stars. Hero worship is imitating another so denying one's true nature. Bollywood actors call themselves Stars! Stars have their own light. We need to teach our children to question religion, culture, our established values and our heroes.

If a man’s wife is kidnapped and when she is rescued, suppose people start saying that she may have had illicit relationship with the kidnapper and the husband suspects so he banishes her and demands she proves her innocence, we call such a husband insensitive and lacking in love. No good man will punish his wife after such an ordeal. But we worship such a man: Lord Rama. He also poured lead into an untouchable Shudra’s ears for listening to the Vedas. Gandhi was so thoroughly conditioned by this God that he even uttered Ram when he was dying after being shot, he never remembered his mother who had been real.

    4. If a man murders his uncle, steals clothes of women while they bathe, plays politics and is treacherous, goes to war and kills people, justifies murder, practices polygamy and does change till his death, we in 21st century would imprison such a man for murder and polygamy. Our Lord Krishna was such a man; we have dance dramas to glorify him and some clever writer has made Bhagavad-Gita flow through his lips. Those days’ tyrants in the form of kings claimed to be gods. Some Tamil actor has a temple, in 300 years if we return we may find our great grandson praying at her shrine! This is how gods are packaged over centuries. Krishna, according to Gita, is an omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent god. We never ask why such a god needs to kill, go to war and have such an insatiable appetite for women.

See another judgement from this justice: “If a man has a ‘keep’ whom he maintains financially and uses mainly for sexual purpose and/or as a servant it would not, in our opinion, be a ‘relationship in the nature of marriage’ for her to claim the benefit of live-in to get maintenance under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.” He rejected the plea for review of this judgment.

  18. We do have the ability to rise but we cannot rise until the govt decides to make education a priority. Whether it be science, shunning casteism, unemployment, and ultimately leading a better life - nothing can be achieved without giving the gift of education to a child. Every single govt that the world has seen in the worlds biggest democracy has failed - for obvious reasons. Unfortunately there are no solutions, and probably will not when we are perfectly happy with this banana republic of ours.

For example there were very little farmer suicides in Tanjore. Only after big building, industries came in, water depleted, there were pollution, health hazards which all affected not only the livelihood of farmers, but all citizens.

Global warming is an after effect of science. Heat generated by industries and AC's has caused more harm.

  33. U mentioned poverty and malnutrition as problem. U then say that ur efforts will be on removing social evils like casteism , communalism.
I feel these are all misplaced priorities. u can ask any poor Hindu or Muslim family. They will take food from anyone and not just from their religion people.
May be ur intention is right but perhaps ur direction is wrong.
I can write blogs mentioning more severe problems of india relating to security, corruption and poverty and they will be good to read but will hardly solve the problem.
Why dont u use ur position to do something about it. I know u might not have resources now, but who has....to remove social evils u need to connect with people.... Why dont u fight elections and then solve problems , like Jaya Prakash Narayanan.
U may say that u cant win elections bcoz of casteism , but thats what u want to remove isnt it.

The tonnes of food being dumped on road in Punjab will not get wasted due to lack of buyers and cold storage and poverty will also get elevated.

May b ppl of India are communal , but still they are living together and certainly do come together to fight against social evils like corruption , women securoty and poverty.

It is not that this country has no good people or resources . the problem is that these people dont want to tackle the problem at the root i.e. politics.

  37. Enlightenment which swept through Europe in the 17th century and ultimately led to the Industrial Revolution never happened in India, and we've never really understood or promoted the importance of rational thought. Ancient Greece which set the tone of western thought had men like Thales speculating the origin of Universe, free from myths of Zeus et. al. in 6th century BCE, whereas the Vedas constantly lumped celestial inquiry with polytheism. The act of speculating about the world's origin without resorting to a supernatural power, or the transition from mythos to logos, is yet to happen in India at large, and we're yet to embrace rational thought.

We train the masses in the end products of evidence based skepticism such as engineering, medicine and technology, we never really stress principles of rational thought which underpins these fields of study. We end up churning out doctors, engineers, scientists, technologists, lawyers and policy makers who may be trained professionally, but are far from being educated or rational. Doctors prescribe medicine without using differential diagnosis and ISRO scientists pray to Tirupati deity before launching lunar missions. If the strata of society often burdened with rational thought, the intelligentsia, carries muddled thinking at best, what kind of mindset can be expected from the rest of the polity?

It is from such observations that Katju states that 90% of Indians are foolish. They may know how to read and write, solve differential equations and program computers, but they are not wise, they are not rational, they do not practice objective, reasoned thought.

The only way out of this mess is to drill down a sense of inquiry into the minds of students when they're still receptive to learning. Celebration of individual human skepticism is missing from the educators and the policy makers and society at large. The issues of caste based politics, gender inequality, corruption can all be tackled if we empower people to question and challenge the roots of human existence, for they will then grow up to be wise, learn the importance of global human equality and will act in a fundamentally good manner according to their free will.

Unless we realize this mess and make sweeping changes in our education system to include some basic teachings of the Occident, there's no way out. Science and technology are the only way to reform a nation mired in backwardness, and true appreciation of science is only possible by embracing some of the Western Thought.

You come across as a passive-aggressive man who uses his strong opinion to hide his incompetence at his day job. The corporate world is full of such people who do not do any work but create a similar smokescreen of false productivity with rhetorical leadership.

Frankly, nobody in the country holds you as a respectable father or a leader figure until and unless you show competence at what you have been hired for.

Or is it important to search for "God Particle", when we have so many problems as suggested by you such as massive poverty, malnutrition, unemployment, farmers suicides, skyrocketing prices, lack of healthcare, good education, intellectual backwardness, casteism, communalism, superstitions, backward and feudal ideas, etc., Should I give up my research and go on to read Urdu poety to combat all the problems that you often cite.

  46. Sir, even worse adjectives were pasted to Respected Mr. T. N. Sheshan. But he could succeed in transforming Indian polity. He had some specific objectives, goals, targets to achieve.

  47. Very unfair on your part to compare a man of action(Seshan) with a man of words(Katju)!!

  48. Sir, as I have been following your writings since years, I would like to see you more active. You as well as some of Indians (the 10%) realaize that without cultural transformation, the rise of India will be most fragile. We are facing the dual crisis of consumersim and hedonism together. A cultural revolution, which must differ from Mao Zedong's to have Indian character, is necessary together practicing creative capitalism with social democrat character to have India sustained at least in mid term. You are one of the persons having great potential to participate in it more actively and not only with posts and writings, but also working with and organizing the masses.
